A Francophone Feminist Movement

In 1992, there had been a desire to create a space for feminist discussion for several years. More than a hundred women met at the first colloquium on feminist intervention at Laurentian University. The Table féministe francophone de concertation provinciale de l'Ontario was born and its members met twice a year until 2018. The Table had a strong public education component, bringing together more than twenty women's organizations operating in Ontario and some individual members. The Table also helped organize women's groups. For example, the Mouvement ontarien des femmes immigrantes francophones (MOFIF) developed through the Table. The group was intersectional and inclusive, discussing many issues that affect a number of women such as services for immigrant women, women farmers' issues and domestic violence. The Table has also evolved over the years to make an impact in important movements like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter. Women and feminists in French Ontario wanted to have a space to talk about what brings them together and what divides them. International Women's Day is celebrated annually on March 8th in Canada and Ontario and is a day of unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy, and action and is celebrated in many countries worldwide
