Canada and Les Jeux de la Francophonie

Every four years since its debut in 1989, Canada has participated in Les Jeux de la Francophonie. Les jeux de la Francophonie is an international sporting competition, developed to bring together Francophones from around the world to encourage dialogue between participants and the public. The event is unique as, in addition to sports, it includes competitive artistic and cultural performances. In 2001, the Games were jointly hosted in two neighbouring Canadian cities separated by the Ottawa River: Ottawa (Ontario) and Gatineau (Québec). In the words of the organization: "When youth, sport and culture come together to demonstrate francophone solidarity, you get 'les Jeux de la Francophonie'"
