In Ontario, all sectors of the labour market are seeking francophone workers, especially in the personal support field. There is also a great lack of French-speaking workers, which is why the province wishes to increase this number. Ontario attracts new workers based on selective immigration. While there are many ways to immigrate to Canada, the most popular method is Express Entry. This is a scoring system that assesses how well applicants will settle and adapt in their new province. Ontario assigns up to 15 additional points directly for francophones applying for permanent residency. Thus, the chances of becoming a permanent resident are greater for Francophones in Ontario. It is for this reason that an increasing number of francophones are leaving Quebec or other provinces to settle in Ontario. In October 2021, the Ontario government promised to introduce legislation to allow foreign-trained newcomers in about 30 professions to have their qualifications recognized without the need for Canadian work experience.
