The Importance of the Semaine Nationale de la Francophonie in Canada 

The Semaine Nationale de la Francophonie surrounds the Journée Nationale de la Francophonie, that takes place on March 20th, 2022. This week is an opportunity to celebrate the French language and its culture, and to highlight the importance of supporting the Francophone communities that enhance our country’s vitality and ensure the sustainability of French culture. Just over 50 years ago, the Government of Canada adopted the Official Languages Act, which recognizes the equal status of French and English in Canada. Recently, there has been a modernization of this Act, that will protect official-language minority community institutions, and ensure the right to be served and to work in French. As such, the French language continues to help define the Canadian identity, facilitate integration, inclusion and dialogue with Francophone communities in Canada and beyond.
