The Work Continues: A Summary of the Summit on the Rapprochement of Canadian Francophonies
Several months ago, we highlighted the long-awaited Summit on the Rapprochement des Francophonies canadiennes, where Quebecois and members of other French communities in Canada came together to build bridges and consider opportunities to promote the Canadian Francophonie identity. Now, several months later, organizers have analyzed the discussions that took place during this major meeting and have made available a summary of the Summit on the rapprochement of Canadian Francophonies. In the words of the representative team, “this document reflects the content, orientation and spirit of the exchanges that took place during the summit. It also aims to summarize the conclusions and courses of action collected throughout the various workshops. These contributions will be considered for the adoption of the next Quebec policy on the Canadian Francophonie.” (Translation by Avantage Ontario team.) In addition to the summary, a charter of commitment (signed by both the Primer of Quebec and President of) has been created. The charter encourages all Quebecers and all other French-speaking Canadians to commit to establishing “dialogue and collaborations”, and to share concrete examples of how they will honor that commitment. Some commitments include establishing a French-Canadian focus in research, use of the language with children and grandchildren, and promoting welcoming actions towards French speakers from other countries. We encourage you, whether you are Canadian or a Francophone or Francophile from any corner of the world, to consider the commitments of other signatories and consider how you will promote the efforts of the Canadian Francophonie as you study in this bilingual country.
