Transit-Oriented Communities Being Developed in Toronto

Toronto Mayor John Tory and other city officials announced details of nine transit-oriented communities that will be built in conjunction with a handful of the 15 stations along the new 15.6-kilometre subway route. This new subway route will be called the Ontario Line. 5 of these new stations will be home to transit-oriented communities. Together, these communities will provide almost 55,000 jobs and create close to 7,000 homes, including affordable housing units.

The biggest transit-oriented community currently in the works is planned for the East Harbour site, which will bring approximately 4,300 units of housing, including affordable housing, along with 10-million square feet of commercial development providing employment for over 50,000. This area will also connect with Go Train lines, a popular and affordable mode of transportation for students travelling around the Greater Toronto Area.

Building these communities around public transportation is an innovative practice that will transform the urban experience of living in Toronto, and also create jobs and housing which will increase the diversity of living spaces and facilitate travel. This project demonstrates Toronto’s modernism and dedication to helping shape the future.
