L’Ontario aurait dû être mon premier choix
Étudier à l’étranger représentait pour moi une opportunité de grandir et de pouvoir voler de mes propres ailes. Je savais que j’en ressortirais avec plusieurs compétences. Avant de venir au Canada, j’ai vécu quelques mois en Afrique du Sud, où j’ai suivi des cours de langues. C’est à partir de là que j’ai commencé à m’intéresser au Canada parce que j’avais la possibilité d’y étudier en français tout en pratiquant mon anglais; une opportunité incroyable. Une autre chose qui a précisé mon choix était l’ouverture du pays aux étrangers, chose que j’ai moins remarquée en Afrique du Sud. Finalement, au Canada, j’ai pu accéder à une éducation de classe mondiale; c’était aussi l’objectif que je visais. Donc, l’Ontario et le Canada m’offraient tout ce que je recherchais.
Lorsque je suis arrivé en Ontario, mes professeurs ont été d’un grand soutien moral pour moi. J’ai tout de suite remarqué la passion qu’ils avaient pour leurs métiers. Grâce à eux, j’ai pu assimiler toutes les informations nécessaires à mon adaptation, ici, au Canada. Une chose qu’il faut savoir c’est que le Canada est un pays où l’information est accessible à tous. Mes professeurs sont très vite devenus des mentors. J’ai également reçu un accueil très chaleureux de la part du secteur international de mon institution d’accueil, leur mission et leur motivation étaient de nous orienter pour faciliter la transition et atténuer le choc culturel. J’ai été accompagnée à chaque étape critique, afin de ne pas me sentir dépaysée. Au Collège, partout où je posais les yeux, il y avait de l’aide disponible pour tous.
À aucun moment je ne me suis sentie gênée de demander de l’aide ou de poser des questions. De temps en temps, je m’impliquais dans les activités que le Collège organisait pour rencontrer de nouvelles personnes et me faire des amis venant de différents endroits du globe. C’est grâce à tout cela que j’ai vécu une expérience mémorable en Ontario.
L’une des choses qui rendent l’expérience d’étude au Canada exceptionnelle, c’est la capacité de s’intégrer dans la société et d’aller au-delà du choc culturel. Nos institutions sont conscientes de l’importance qu’a cet aspect et fournissent un accompagnement adapté aux nouveaux étudiants pour atténuer l’effet que pourrait avoir le choc ressenti lorsqu’ils ont le mal du pays à leur arrivée. De bons exemples serraient les ateliers organisés par le bureau international grâce à l’accompagnement des mentors et le bureau du registraire avec les ambassadeurs du Collège. For me, studying abroad represented an opportunity to grow up and be able to stand on my own feet. I knew I would come out with many new skills. Before coming to Canada, I lived for a few months in South Africa, where I took some languages courses. It was from there that I developed an interest in Canada, as I would have the opportunity to study in French while practicing my English, an incredible opportunity. Another thing that defined my choice was the opening of the country to foreigners, something that I noticed less in South Africa. Finally, in Canada, I was able to access a world-class education, which was the goal I was aiming for. Ontario and Canada offered everything I was looking for.
When I arrived in Ontario, my instructors were a great moral support for me. I immediately noticed the passion that they had for their jobs. Thanks to them, I was able to assimilate all the information necessary to adapt to life here in Canada. One thing to note is that Canada is a country where information is accessible to everyone. My instructors quickly became mentors. I also received a very warm welcome from the international department of my institution, as their mission and their motivation were to guide us to make the transition and reduce culture shock. I have been accompanied at every critical step so that I wouldn’t feel out of place. In college, everywhere I looked, there was help available for everyone. I never felt uncomfortable to ask for help or ask questions. From time to time, I got involved in the activities the College organized to meet new people and make new friends from different parts of the world. It is thanks to all of this that I had such a memorable experience in Ontario.
One of the things that made my experience studying in Canada exceptional is the capacity to integrate into society without going experiencing too much culture shock. Our institutions are conscious of the importance of this aspect, and they provide supports for new students to lessen the effect that the shock of feeling homesick might have upon arrival. Some good examples are workshops organized by the international office with the accompaniment of mentors, and the registrar’s office with ambassadors from the College.
